RE: NIAGARA DISTRICT SIDEWALKS

Dear Peter,

It was a pleasure meeting you on Saturday, December 4, 1999. Congratulations on your new position as the Niagara District Legislative Aide. I'm sure that we will have an ongoing dialogue as you assume your new role, but I did want to pass one bit of information your way as an addendum to the notes you were taking about sidewalk projects.

Please find enclosed a letter of support regarding Hogan Restoration's re-use of the former Firehouse #2 at Jersey and Plymouth. As mentioned in the letter, the sidewalks adjacent to the side of the fire house which faces Plymouth Avenue between Jersey and Porter are in horrible shape - if they can be called sidewalks at all.

The sidewalks were ripped up and the whole area from the building to the curb was black-topped by the City of Buffalo for the convenience of fire trucks and other vehicles entering the rear lot. In addition, all lighting was removed. As noted in the attached letter, the community would like to see the blacktop removed and the area returned to a normal sidewalk configuration with new sidewalks and grassy areas between the sidewalk and the curb line restored. In addition, there should be one or two lights placed there. Lighting is an important deterrent to crime and according to old maps, there were light standards before they were removed.

Members of our block club have spoken briefly to Ms. Kozlowski of Hogan Restoration about this, however if Mr. Bonifacio is serious about putting forth requests for sidewalk repairs, this is something we should pursue, especially since it was the City of Buffalo that blacktopped the area to begin with and should undo their changes now that the building is no longer being used as a fire house. Please note that the area in question is in the Niagara District.

Peter, please drive by the firehouse to get a better idea of what I'm talking about and maybe run this past Nick. If you think this is worth pursuing, please contact me and we can set up a brief meeting between the KCA and Hogan Restoration and yourself and/or Nick.

Once again, good luck on your new position. We have faith in you and will support you!
