KCA Neighborhood in 1880

This map from 1880 shows the neighborhood as it existed at that time. The Fargo mansion (demolished 1900) can be seen in the lower left, at the corner of Jersey St. and Fargo Ave. On the block west, bounded by 11th (now West Ave.), 12th (now Plymouth Ave.), Jersey and Pennsylvania Streets is the conservatory which served the Fargo mansion. At the corner of 12th and Jersey, Fire House #2 can be seen. Across the street, also on 12th and Jersey, the Plymouth Ave., Methodist Episcopal Church can be seen. The State Normal School (now Grover Cleveland High School), can be seen at the top of the picture. The Circle (now Symphony Circle) can be seen in the upper right hand corner.

You can also see the Sidway mansion (demolished 1890) on 11th Street and Hudson. (Hudson is not labeled, but is the first street right of Pennsylvania Street). The Circus Grounds on Wadsworth Street can also be observed. It is the large grassy area bounded by Wadsworth, Pennsylvania, Hudson and Mulligan streets. Houses dot the exterior portions of the lot bounded by Pennsylvania and Hudson. This area was used as a circus ground until 1884 when Orton and St. John's Places were created.
