JANUARY 2000

H a p p y N e w Y e a r ! !

2000 Meeting Schedule. We will continue to meet on the 3rd Wednesday evening of each month, but in January, we will be meeting on the 12th, because of traffic calming issues (see Traffic Calming below). Meetings are held at 7:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church (tower door next to the parking lot). The next few meetings are:

Wed. January 12, 2000 7:00 PM

Wed. February 16, 2000 7:00 PM

Wed. March 15, 2000 7:00 PM

Foreclosed houses. 367 Pennsylvania joins the ranks of homes in our area which have been foreclosed by lending institutions. Please keep your eyes open and keep an active watch on this house (and all abandoned housing in our neighborhood). Report all suspicious activity to the police.

Kudos to Michael La Shomb for getting two abandoned houses at 357 and 359 Hudson St. boarded. Housing inspections is currently working on the abandoned properties by citing their owners for housing violations.

New Porter Ave. Block Leader. Shane Stephenson has agreed to serve as KCA Block Leader for Porter Ave., helping to distribute newsletters and serving as an information liaison for block club meetings. Thank you Shane, and we certainly love your enthusiasm! Shane can be reached at 884-3099.

KCA Bylaws. At the last KCA meeting, changes to the organizational bylaws were reviewed and approved. Thanks to John Allen for spearheading the Bylaws Review Committee!

Community Crime Prevention Meeting. A problem solving meeting between the community and the Buffalo Police Department is scheduled for Tue. Jan 11, 2000 7PM at the Hamlin House on Franklin St. The purpose of the meeting is to identify proactive measures to keep the area around TOY (corner of Mariner and Allen) safe and secure for those utilizing the theatre. One of the first items is to identify public safety concerns in our area. Please voice any concerns and/or issues you may have about public safety to Chris Brown, 884-1914 or cbrown4884@aol.com (E-mail) no later than Monday night, 1/10/2000.

Snow Removal. Now that the winter weather is here, please be considerate of others and shovel your walks - it is appreciated by area pedestrians!

In order to improve snow plowing on residential side streets, the Mayor's Office and City Department Heads have developed an odd/even parking program to be implemented during emergency snow fighting conditions. In the event of a snow emergency, the Mayor will make a formal announcement implementing odd/even parking rules. The odd/even parking restrictions will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue for 24 hours. If a snow emergency were to be issued on an odd numbered date ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, vehicles must be parked on the odd side of your street. If a snow emergency were to be issued on an even numbered date ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, vehicles must be parked on the even side of your street. This plan will help to clear winter snow.

Orton Gardens. Planning is continuing on 20 Orton Place community gardens with the assistance of neighborhood residents and Grassroots Gardens. The lot was recently leveled and we are currently pursuing legal permission/liability issues in order to use the lot for gardening and are researching methods of securing the land to preserve planned improvements. Thanks to Coco Wozniak for her assistance!

Traffic Calming. Hopefully everyone in our community has either participated in public forums on traffic calming sponsored by Heart of the City Neighborhoods (HCN), attended meetings on the topic by the Fargo Estate Neighborhood Association or have had information sent to you by a resident from your block. Please take time to consider how traffic calming devices can be used to help calm traffic on your block. For your convenience, all 8 approved traffic calming devices have been reproduced on the back of this newsletter.

At our next KCA meeting on 1/12/2000, we plan to collect information and put your ideas together into one cohesive plan for our area which we will discuss and present at a HCN Traffic Calming Working Committee meeting scheduled for Thursday Jan. 13, 2000 at Towne Restaurant, 5:15 PM.

Rich Morrisroe from HCN will be present at our next KCA meeting (1/12), so please attend or ensure that your thoughts about traffic calming are made known to your block traffic calming coordinator!
